Jim and Alice Sercombe claim they are “somewhat enthusiastic” collectors of vintage pedal cars and model trucks. If you still believe they are “somewhat enthusiastic” after visiting their garage, then I can’t imagine what a serious pedal car or model truck collector looks like!
Jim and Alice started a Jackson, Michigan based trucking company named Sercombe Trucking about 50 years ago. Jim drove the truck. Alice took care of the books, the office, and the home. Years of quality service, a quality team, help from the family, and smart decisions grew the trucking company into a fleet of trucks, drivers, and a drop lot, also known as a depot location, all headquartered in the Sercombe’s hometown of Jackson. We are proud to have Sercombe Trucking in our community!
Jim stopped by Pit Products earlier this year after he heard we might be a group of guys who could help him with some diamond plate aluminum shelves Jim wanted to install in his garage. Jim ordered a couple shelves, we built them and Jim took them home.
A few weeks later he ordered a couple more shelves. Then a couple more. Then a couple more.
Before we knew it Jim had ordered over 30 diamond plate aluminum shelves of differing lengths and widths from Pit Products.
We had to know what the heck Jim was doing with the shelves.
We asked Jim and he said, “Oh, I’m just using the shelves to display some of my model trucks…”
We said, “Well, could we come over and see what you’ve built?”
Jim’s reply, “Sure, call my wife, Alice, and she’ll show you around.”
A few weeks later we had the pleasure of visiting the Sercombe home and boy-o-boy were we impressed when Alice opened up the garage for us!
The walls were covered with beautiful, fully restored, and functional vintage pedal cars and hundreds of wonderful model trucks. Model tractor-trailers, model fire trucks, model agricultural trucks, model cargo trucks, model delivery trucks — an amazing array of miniature truck hauling history on display in their garage.
It was a joy to spend some time with Alice as she showed us around and told us stories of the Sercombe Trucking business and family history. The story is really an example of the American dream come true.
